Nobody had figured out what an artist would need to live on for a year—yeah, a studio, a place to live, supplies, a little bit of money. I had a wife and four kids; I had to be sure I could take care of them, too. Don and the museum had to estimate all this. Yes, I said, I believe in a Supreme Being. Wrath turned away, he departed. Incidents like this made an artist’s residency in Roswell unpredictable. 26 Chapter One The environment provided by the residency encourages an artist to concentrate on his work without having to confront some of the distractions that might normally sap his creative energies, and without having to go into hock.

Driving along a back road, I passed a cut exposing what looked to me like a very pure vein of gray stoneware clay. The beds I had seen before were not worth the bother because they had so much sand and gravel in them.
