Nobody had figured out what an artist would need to live on for a year—yeah, a studio, a place to live, supplies, a little bit of money. I had a wife and four kids; I had to be sure I could take care of them, too. Don and the museum had to estimate all this. Gene Smith and Lee Johnson from the Roswell Museum came out to see me in San Patricio. I fed them quelites—in English that’s lamb’s quarters; they used to grow on my land down toward the river.
