Before the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the oldest Hebrew manuscripts of the Bible were Masoretic texts dating to 9th century. The caves surrounding Qumran are numbered based upon the order of their finding and their production of scrolls and scroll fragments. Ideally this will be a scanned copy of the original that can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons and proofread. In fact, all of these ancient historical records confirm the truth of the Gospels.

Did the Dead Sea Scrolls shed light on any particular biblical text? In the passage from Josephus cited above, Josephus describes an oath which the Essene was to take "that he will neither conceal anything from those of his own sect, nor discover any of their doctrines to others, no, not though any one should compel him to do so at the hazard of his life" (Wars, 2.8.7). Let's look at some of the key differences between the LXX and the MT where the LXX seems to be superior. 4QGenk has added "and dry land appeared" indicating that the longer reading of the LXX is from an ancient Hebrew text that the MT lost by haplography.

There are many individual parallels between passages in the scrolls and the New Testament, and we point out some of these in the body of the book. The Dead Sea Scrolls have increased our confidence that faithful scribal transcription substantially has preserved the original content of Isaiah. Apparently some of these compositions were treated by the Qumran community as canonical and were studied by them. The third section is a list of some twenty-two halakhot, most of which are peculiar to the sect. The scroll also describes the Messiah as a "leader of the community" who was "put to death."
