Morgan and M. (1990). ‘Collective Intentions and Actions’. In this paper I critique van Inwagen’s Quinean metaontology, finding that certain challenges, supplemented by pressure to reflect more closely Quine’s work, should drive Quineans to adopt a stronger metaontology incorporating more of Quine’s radical views. Rather than allow rationality to fully explore the greatest and most fundamental questions of humanity, it chisels away all things broad or untenable, without exploring the propositions fully.

While the realist asserts we can somehow make it to reality without the problematic stepping-stone of sense-data, the reductionist or phenomenalist, in fact a very different philosophical character, has it that there is no gap to cross. In Fries, we have the distinction between Wissen, Glaude, and Ahndung, where Wissen ("knowledge") is the positive knowledge of mathematics and science, Glaube ("belief") consists of the abstract clues to things-in-themselves that Kant sees in morality, and then Ahndung ("intimation") consists of the positive aesthetic feelings that relate us directly to things-in-themselves.

The best of them will be guesses at truth, and will be subject to modification as more facts are known and as known facts become more and more fully analysed and criticized. Quine’s work, though by no means widely accepted, has made analytic philosophers at least wary of uncritically accepting certain of their standard distinctions.
