Husserl called the intentional activity of consciousness "object-constituting subjectivity" by which all meanings are "constituted," that is, disclosed and made manifest. For example, some ethicists have asserted, from their philosophical armchairs, that character is the most significant determinant of action. These authors offered a reading of world history in terms of the rise and fall of civilizations, races, or cultures. For Ericson (1994), the criticisms held weight, but a "second generation" of analytic philosophy of education still survived.
